Taps dry when water pump breaks down

COMMENDABLE EFFORT: PWD staff hard at work to fix the new water pump.

LAWAS: The taps went dry for four days here last week due to a pump breakdown which resulted in many local people foregoing their bath.

A heavy-duty 150 horse power motor and pump had to be sourced in cash as the supplier in Sabah refused the normally accepted service order and was finally delivered to the site at Sungai Gaya intake station.

Water was finally restored on Wednesday night to Banting and Punang, after the old pump which broke down was replaced.

The pumping station was working overtime to meet the demand in Lawas as the Trusan Water Treatment plant
project was delayed due to the contractor facing physical work obstruction.

PWD technicians here literally worked round the clock to deliver water to the residents. Its engineer Norman Jan worked tireless behind the scene and sometimes went to his men until late at night to send water tankers to the affected residents.

He said that certain areas still had water as they were fed by different line of distribution mains while Banting and
Punang areas were the worst hit.

PWD distributed water to the affected areas affected using a single water tanker but this was soon boosted by four lorries contracted by the department.
