BANDAR SERI BEGAWAN: “To my beloved mama and papa” … These were the last words that an officer cadet wrote on a religious book, which she presented as a gift to her parents before leaving for a one-week training to Ulu Belait. She bade them a fond farewell but little did they know it would be her last goodbye, Borneo Bulletin reported.

The late OCdt Farhana bte Hj Jaidin (see left photo) was one of the victims of the Bell 212 helicopter crash in July last year. Her parents never thought that the religious book that was presented on a Sunday, July 15, would be the last memory of their beloved daughter. His Majesty the Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam yesterday consented to sign the religious book entitled “Kitab Amalan Rahsia Al-Quran”.

Her parents, Hj Jaidin Hj Timbang and Fatimah Hj Md Ali, said the book was given on the occasion of His Majesty’s birthday and felt it was right to have the monarch consenting to sign it as a memory for them.

Hj Jaidin said His Majesty, who is also the Minister of Defence and Supreme Commander of the Royal Brunei Armed Forces (RBAF), showed great concern over the welfare of even the lowest of ranks such as cadets who perished in the tragic accident last year.

“I would like to thank His Majesty and the RBAF for the appreciation given to us. The support and assistance from all involved will never be forgotten.

“We are proud of the 8th OCS intake for completing their training albeit the tragedy last year. They proved that they can excel with flying colours and their courage and determination is a tribute to honour our fallen heroes and heroines, which is why we are here today,” he said.
