GEORGE TOWN: About 100 Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR) members caused a commotion yesterday when they attempted to barge into the federal government department complex at Bangunan Persekutuan to stage a sit-down protest.

The group, led by PKR vice-president N Surendran, had marched for about 400 metres from Jalan Larut to the complex in Jalan Anson at about 10 am and rammed a police barricade on the pretext of wanting to conduct their business en masse.

Also seen among the protestors were Batu Uban Assemblyman S Raveentharan, Pantai Jerejak Assemblyman Sim Tze Tzin, Kebun Bunga Assemblyman Jason Ong and Komtar Assemblyman Ng Wei Aik.

Surendran said they wanted to hold the demonstration to protest an alleged delay by the NRD over the issuing of citizenship and identity documents.

He said they also brought along 15 children, aged between six and 14, who did not have birth certificates.

“We want the NRD to be rid of bureaucratic red tape to make it easier for these children to be issued with birth certificates so that they can lead normal lives like other Malaysians,” he added. — Bernama
