SIBU: Sarawak United People’s Party (SUPP) Sibu branch chairman Dato Sri Wong Soon Koh said a team of over 1,200 committed leaders from his branch would lead the two BN-SUPP candidates here into the battlefield to ensure victory in the coming general election.

Speaking at the Chinese New Year gathering of the branch’s service centre at Engkilo village on Saturday, Wong, who is also the Second Finance Minister, described them as “The best among the best leaders” from the committees, Youth’s and Women’s sections of the branch’s 15 units spread across the town.

He said they had for months been merging into the crowd and after the Chinese New Year celebration they would intensify their efforts to ensure Temenggong Vincent Lau and Datuk Tiong Thai King would not only win the hearts of the people but lead them to the government for the progress of Sibu.

“We shall see victory if we keep a positive attitude in working together, but we shall fall if we let our organisation go loose.”

Wong assured their branch was well organised, saying there were about 120 leaders in each unit and at least 80 in smaller ones.

He said after the festive celebration, these leaders must be armed to the teeth for the war.

“Shape up. We must be fully geared and we must strengthen our machinery. We must go out to convince the people to remain in the government for our prosperity.”

Wong regarded such efforts as important because the opposition parties had been successful in their propaganda, whom he said had been stirring the sentiments of the people and misleading them to rise against the government.

“These few years the faith of some people have been shaken. The opposition has also stirred them to bring down SUPP.”

The branch chairman said it was their duty to convince the people to support the government led by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak.

He said Najib had walked the talk through his Transformation Plan despite leading the nation for just more than three years, singling the 1Malaysia concept expounded by Najib as being able to take the nation to greater heights. In his speech, Lau reminded the people to remain with the government.

“Only when they remain in the government can they see positive results as they work with the government.

“This is a life and death battle. We must win the two seats to let Sibu rise to see better hopes.”

Later, leaders of the service centre jointly cut the festive cakes with Wong and Lau. Both Wong and Lau also presented gifts to the elders of the village.
