Crime index expected to be lower this year

KOTA KINABALU: State Police Commissioner Datuk Hamza Taib expects lower crime index this year, based on their outstanding performance in 2012, especially in fatal accidents and house break-ins.

“Sabah did well and and our efforts were recognised, especially in reducing fatal accident and house break-in cases during the Ops Selamat I last year compared to other states.

“So it is not impossible for us to repeat the performance in the implementation of the Ops Selamat II which will be held beginning yesterday (Feb 3) to Feb 17,” he said when launching the programme which is held in conjunction with the Chinese New Year at Suria Sabah here yesterday.

Hamza said the programme this year would also be focusing on property and home protection, especially when the occupants are away for the holidays, apart from road safety.

“We would organise more patrols at the housing areas, especially at night,” he said, adding that they would also beef up security along Sabah waters to ensure the safety of those who choose to return to their village by water.

The Police Commissioner has directed the police marine team to increase operations to ensure passenger boats abide by the maritime laws and regulations.

“We would also increase inspection at the port and public jetties to eradicate smuggling of controlled items and fireworks,” he said.
