GEORGE TOWN: Deputy Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin described the contribution from professionals as crucial in propelling the nation’s development to a much higher level.

He said professionals formed the backbone for the country’s target to reach developed status by 2020 and played a key role in its transformation process.

“There’s still a lot to be explored in-depth to improve all our steps. This transformation journey is to reach the destination which has been determined by all of us,” he said during a keynote address at a dialogue with
professionals, titled ‘The Transformation Journey’ at Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM), here yesterday.

A total of 700 professionals from various government departments and agencies attended the event, including Minister in Prime Minister’s Department Tan Sri Nor Mohamed Yakcop, Tourism Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ng Yen Yen and USM vice-chancellor Prof Datuk Dr Omar Osman.

He also stressed that the future of the next generations depended on the decisions made now.

“Professionals need to play a critical role and it’s hoped they will continue contributing to the future well-being of the people,” he said.

Muhyiddin further emphasised that the government always upheld its promises and prioritised the welfare of the people.

“We must always focus on our objective to achieve developed nation status and at the same time it’s the responsibility of the government to be trustworthy and deliver all its promises,” he said. — Bernam
