S’wak, Sabah contribute Malaysia’s two medals

TWO BRONZES IN THE BAG: Teams representing Malaysia with their winning medals.

MIRI: Malaysia has successfully collected bronze medals in Floor Hockey and Snowshoeing – the only two games it competed in the Special Olympic World Winter Games (SOWWG) 2013, Pyeongchang, South Korea.

An official and freelance media for the national contingent Jennie Soh reported in an email that both teams did extremely well despite the cold weather, food adjustment and environment.

Malaysia, which was represented by a team from Sarawak in the Floor Hockey, competed against 38 countries.

This was Malaysia’s second appearance in floor hockey competition of the Special Olympics – the first time was in the Special Olympics World Winter in Idaho, USA in 2009 when the team won the silver medal.

In Snowshoeing, a team from Sabah representing Malaysia, competed among 50 countries.

The Malaysian chef de mission is Liza Chai and the five officials comprised Badrulisharm Ameramn (Head Coach), Sanfa Guel, Pang Lee Ying, Raymond Epun and Jennie Soh.

The athletes from Sabah are Joanne Cheryln Julius and Mohd Zulkarnain Mohd Riduan while the athletes from Sarawak are Jacker Rupiah, Lody Abu, Saie Goeng, Jonti Moten, Najmi Farkhrullah Mohd Naim, Nazmi Fathullah Mohd Naim, Mohd Nur Fidaus Andi, Farrel Gindong Jeffery, Gabriel Pidan Charles, Nadzzairuddin Mohamad Sawai, Glady Rait, Alerens Dennis, Jethro Ling Jing Xiong and Muhammad Shawn Ramzi Faizal.

The week-long 2013 Special Olympics World Winter Games concluded last night as an array of dignitaries, sports legends, celebrities and corporate leaders were expected to witness the inspiring power of sports to unite people with and without intellectual disabilities.

More than 2,300 Special Olympic athletes from more than 110 nations participated in the Winter Games.

The Special Olympics, held every four years, is the world’s largest sports organisation for adults and children with intellectual disabilities.
