MIRI: Mirians can continue to stand tall and be proud that it had achieved many firsts not just for the city, but also for Sarawak and Malaysia.

The executive chairman of Miri Housing Group of Companies Dato Lau Siu Wai said the opening of the Golden Screen Cinemas (GSC) at Bintang Megamall yesterday was among Miri’s achievements.

“This is one way to prove to the world or whoever comes to Miri not to think that we are still living up in the trees,” said Lau at the launch of the cinema here yesterday.

Among those present were GSC chief executive officer Koh Mei Lee, GSC general manager Irving Chee, executive director of Bintang Megamall Ricky Lau and senior assistant cinema manager Eugene George.

According to Lau, the setting up of the cinema was in line with the overall development of Miri, especially in the economic and tourism sectors, which were the two major sectors greatly needed to accelerate the city’s development.

As for his companies, Lau said among the efforts taken were the setting up of the Bintang Megamall which had Parkson as its anchor tenant and the development of the Water Theme Park at Senadin.

It will not only have commercial and recreational facilities but also Tenby International School and a university to enhance Senadin’s position in becoming an educational hub.

Currently, Senadin area has many educational institutions including Curtin University and the Industrial Training Institute (ILP) Miri.

He said the Tenby School will start its operation at the theme park by September this year, while the whole project is expected to be ready in about three years’ time.

“As promised by Irving Chee during breakfast this morning, the park will also have GSC facilities,” adding that it augured well for the development of Miri.

He thanked GSC Sdn Bhd for making the GSC Bintang Megamall a reality.
