KENINGAU: The motoring community should obey law and order while on the road or when engaged in other activities to prevent complaints from the public, said District Road Transport Department (RTD) chief Sharulnizam Mohd Yatim here.

He said the RTD must first be informed of any vehicle modifications including mirrors, exhaust system, lights and engine.

“RTD will always use its discretion but if the condition can be a danger to other users, including getting complaints from the public, then RTD will not hesitate to take stern action in accordance with existing laws,” he told members of the Keningau zone Motoring Association of Borneo Sabah (PERMOS) led by its chairman, Martin Wong, who paid a courtesy call on him at his office here.

Also present was Permos president Datu Mohd Fadli Fathullah.

Sharulnizam said vehicle modifications without prior notification to RTD was a serious offence as it also involved laws and insurance.

In this regard, he asked members of Permos to cooperate with RTD before doing any modifications to their vehicles.

“Similarly for organized activities such as an auto motor show, the RTD and the government departments concerned should be informed of the vehicle modifications to ensure that the activities have no negative impact on the public.

“RTD supports any healthy activity that is beneficial to members of the association and the public,” he said.

He hoped Permos committee members in the district will give their full cooperation to RTD before organizing any activities for members and the public, and to comply with the law when making vehicle modifications, whether it be on the road or on-site auto show, as this requires approval from RTD.

Meanwhile, Martin said the district Permos would be conducting the Sound Blast Off Show at Arked Hall every Saturday in February.

He said this activity, beginning 7.30pm to 9pm, is open to the public, especially members of the association to prevent them from doing unhealthy activities.

Martin said the public are invited to come to the event this weekend.

“I am also satisfied with the courtesy call on RTD which gave several guidelines to its members to follow. By understanding the law, any bad events can be avoided,” he said.

He said Permos in the district had over 300 members.

Meanwhile, Permos president Datu Mohd Fadli Fathullah said motoring activities were very appealing to young people and to date, 1,000 members had signed up to be members of Permos throughout the state.

He said the main focus of Permos was to do a variety of activities so that members and the public understood the true concept of motoring and the law.

Fadli said Permos was established on August 7 last year as an outreach motoring association that worked with government departments such as the police, RTD and other agencies to combat the misuse of law, and also provided legal seminars.
