KOTA KINABALU: Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) is set to become an environmental conservation reference centre for other higher learning institutions with the launch yesterday of its five-year EcoCampus master plan.

Higher Education director general Datuk Dr Rujhan Mustafa said the university’s unique natural landscape and its rich biodiversity and ecosystem would facilitate the university’s bid to become the first campus in the country to achieve EcoCampus status by 2017.

“UMS is the first public university to come forward with a solid long-term environmental conservation plan. If this plan succeeds it will not only be the nation’s gain, where government agencies and the private sector or other entities can refer to, but also allow UMS to be recognised for its endeavour internationally,” he told reporters after the launch of the master plan at the Out-Door Development Centre (ODEC) at UMS’ Borneo Marine Research Institute here yesterday. — Bernama
