KUCHING: The 1Malaysia Licence Aid (BL1M) programme, which provides an opportunity for people to obtain motorcycle licence at a cheaper rate, has received encouraging response from the public here.

A quick poll by The Borneo Post yesterday revealed that its respondents have nothing but good words for this latest government initiative to ease the burden of the middle and lower income group.

Muhd Izikhairul Nizam Jeffery, 17, a Form 5 student from a school in Petra Jaya said he was looking forward to carry a driving licence.

“After the programme was announced, my father immediately helped me to get the application forms. This is an opportunity to obtain the licence at a cheaper fee. Having it will make it easier for me to move around like going to tuition, class or helping my parents to run errant.

“Due to road safety concern which is my parents and my priority, I am applying for the licence,” said Izikhairul happily when met yesterday.

“This will help to reduce the burden of my parents,” he added while thanking the government for the initiative which will benefit the people, especially youths and their parents.

Meanwhile, Frankie Jana, 19, has no doubt that BL1M will help to reduce the number of road accidents involving unlicenced motorcyclists and at the same time to further instil road safety awareness.

“It is an effort by the government to help youths particularly those who could not afford it. No more excuses for not having a licence now,” he said.

State BL1M director Datuk Safri Abdullah said BL1M, which is for new motor licence applicants, had received overwhelming response here.

“Many youths today have access to Internet and therefore there are many online applications. We want to remind the youths that they still need to submit the physical forms and RM199 in the form of money order which is payable to ‘My EG Services Berhad’ at the nearest offices of BN Youth or BN component parties which have been identified.”

“For further information on the location of the BN Youth or BN component parties offices, log on to www. bl1m.my,” said Safri, who is also PBB supreme council member, when contacted yesterday.

“We expect many more youths aged between 17 and 40 in Sarawak to apply for BL1M. Pemuda BN Sarawak hopes to help as many youths as possible to apply for it as riding motorcycles without licence have many negative consequences.

BL1M is opened to Malaysians aged between 17 and 40 years irrespective of race and gender. They must also not be blacklisted by the Road Transport Department to be eligible.
