PENAMPANG: A pregnant woman was killed when the Proton Wira car she was traveling in together with seven of her family members rammed into a tree at the Kota Kinabalu-Papar road, near the Lok Kawi army camp.

Rhuhaifah Azhar, 29, from Kampung Lembising, Putatan, who was said to be two months pregnant, died at the scene of the accident which occurred at about 1.10pm on Sunday, the first day of Chinese New Year celebrations.

Her husband and driver of the car, Pasal Mohd Tutoh, 29, four children and two family members were injured and admitted to the Queen Elizabeth Hospital where they were reported to be in stable condition.

Penampang police chief DSP Ratan Kumar Singh said initial police investigation revealed that the family travelling in a Proton Wira car was on their way home from Pengalat Besar, Papar when the husband lost control of the vehicle and skidded off the road before ramming into a tree by the roadside.

“The deceased was pinned to the front passenger seat as a result of the crash and it took about half an hour for the Fire and Rescue personnel to extricate her,” he said.

Singh said police are still conducting further investigation into the case and urged eyewitnesses to come forward to assist police in their investigation.

He also reminded the public to be more careful while driving to their destination, especially during the festive holiday, to avoid any untoward incidents.
