TUARAN: The Sabah Kadazandusun Murut Welfare and Education Association (Pekadin) has suggested to the Education Ministry to increase the intake of Kadazandusun language trainee teachers in the state to 80.

Currently, there are only 20 trainee teachers undergoing the course which was introduced last year at the Kent Teachers’ Training Institute, according to association vice-president Luis Lidong.

In a statement yesterday, he said the existing quota of 20 was not sufficient to cater to the more than 300 government primary schools in Sabah which offered the subject.

According to him, the suggestion was in line with the Education Ministry’s vision to promote the language among the Kadazandusun Murut community.

“Hopefully, apart from Kent Institute, the Education Ministry would also introduce the course at Sabah’s other teachers’ training institutes at Gaya Institute, Keningau Institute and Tawau Institute,” said Lidong.

He hoped more individuals, private companies and non-governmental organisations would undertake to produce reference books in the language, including dictionaries. — Bernama
