SUNGAI PETANI: The Barisan Nasional (BN) is now on its  best footing since the 2008 general election as support for the coalition is getting stronger and stronger ahead of the upcoming 13th general election, said Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin.

The Deputy Prime Minister said the response by the BN government to the people changed after the 2008 general election, causing support for the BN to rise dramatically of late.

“The federal government is always overcoming its weaknesses including by going to the ground to solve the people’s problems. This is different
from the opposition which is only good at making empty promises.

“The initiatives taken by the federal government has resulted in extraordinary changes and the people have responded in kind by returning to support the BN,” he said at a 1Malaysia gathering and launching the BN’s Kedah-level ‘Blue Wave’ campaign to wrest back the state from the opposition at the  Taman Ria public field here Saturday night.

Muhyiddin who is one a one-day visit to Kedah was accompanied by his wife Puan Sri Norainee Abdul Rahman. Also present were Kedah Umno chief Datuk Ahmad Bashah Md Hanipah, his deputy Datuk Mukhriz Tun Dr Mahathir and leaders from other BN component parties.

He said the opposition  harboured amibitions to topple the BN without any regard for all the good done by the coalition for the country and people.

“They are willing to twist issues and peddle lies including slandering the BN government, that it did not look after the welfare of the people, oppressed the people and allowed prices of good to go up.”

“Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak takes this as a challenge and has never kept quiet. He takes the needed action to resolve the people’s problems.

Muhyiddin said Malaysia was one of the few nations in the world that truly cared for the people.

“(Opposition leader) Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said the government does not care about the people. This is another lie.

“Malaysia is one of the few countries in the world that controls the prices of essential goods. The United States and Thailand for example don’t do it because they practice a free market economy,” he told the gathered crowd of more than 30,000 people.

Ahmad Bashah, in his speech, said the people of Kedah should give the mandate to the BN in the upcoming general election so that they could have a brighter future.

Meanwhile, MCA vice-president Datuk Seri Chor Chee Heung, who also spoke at the function, said the people of Kedah should vote out the PAS-led government in the state as they brought little progress for the people.

Another speaker, MIC vice-president Datuk M Saravanan said the power sharing concept practised by the BN had brought the country to where it is today and as such, the people should give the BN a bigger mandate in the upcoming general election. — Bernama
