Case of former ISA detainee, housewife charged with promoting act of terrorism for mention tomorrow

KUALA LUMPUR: The case of a former Internal Security Act (ISA) detainee, Yazid Sufaat, who is charged with promoting acts of terrorism in strife-torn Syria, will come up for mention at the High Court here tomorrow.

Yazid’s lawyer, Fadiah Nadwa Fikri, told media members at the lobby of the Jalan Duta Court Complex here yesterday that the court also set the same day to mention the case of Halimah Hussein, a friend of Yazid who was also charged with the same offence.

Both the cases will be called for mention before Judge Kamardin Hashim.

Last Feb 8, Yazid, 49, and Halimah, 52, were charged in the Ampang magistrate’s court with committing the offence, but no plea was recorded.

Yazid, who operates a cafeteria at the court complex here, was charged with committing the offence at a house in Taman Bukit Ampang, Lorong Mutiara 2, Lembah Jaya, Ampang, between 8.30am and 10.30am between Aug 1 and Oct 20, 2012.

The charge, under Section 130G (a) of the Penal Code, read together with Section 109,carries a maximum imprisonment for 30 years and a fine, upon conviction.

Halimah, a housewife, is charged with abetting Yazid at the same place, date and time.

They are the first individuals to be charged under the Penal Code for an offence which involved act of terrorism after the ISA was abolished on July 31, 2012 and replaced with the Security Offences (Special Measures) Act.

Yazid was detained under the ISA for seven years since December 2011 on suspicion of being involved with the Jemaah Islamiyah militant group. — Bernama
