Dirty eateries face closure, Health Dept warns

SIBU: Eateries and bakeries failing the cleanliness assessment set by the state Health Department could be closed down.

This warning was given by the department’s director Datu Dr Zulkifli Jantan when asked about eateries infested with flies and cockroaches following complaints by customer about a dirty bakery here.

He added the presence of the insects indicated a poor level of hygiene and cleanliness.

“But, overall status is assessed using a complete format and if they (eateries) score very low then, the premises can be asked to close in order to carry out necessary improvements,” Dr Zulkifli said.

A disgruntled customer had complained to The Borneo Post that there were flies buzzing around pastries and cakes in the shop.

“I was about to use a tong to get hold of a slice of cheese cake when several dark objects started to buzz around frenziedly.

“Taking a close look, it confirmed my worst fear that they were flies,” the patron, who did not wish to be identified, complained.

Meanwhile, an observation at the bakery shop mentioned by the disgruntled customer, confirmed there were indeed flies hovering on the food displayed on the shelves.

Although the cakes and other pastries were kept in the enclosed shelves, flies had managed to find their way in.

There were also flies flying around the premises, obviously attracted by the freshly baked pastries.

A customer was seen chasing away the flies as she tried to grab the food using a tong.
