Man slapped with three months’ jail for theft of woman’s handbag

KOTA KINABALU: A man was jailed for three months by the Magistrate’s Court here yesterday for theft.

Edeanwand Marjun, 25, pleaded guilty before magistrate Nuruhuda Mohd Yusof to stealing a handbag of a woman at an area at Api-Api Centre here on Feb 11.

The accused was convicted under Section 379 of the Penal Code which carries a jail term of up to seven years and also is liable to a fine or both, upon conviction.

Prosecuting officer Inspector Syahrin Ali told the court that the victim was about to open her shop and put her handbag on the floor near the shop.

The accused suddenly came and took away her handbag but was later caught by the public near the area.

In a separate case, Filipino labourer Jefri Wahit was jailed for two months by the same court after he pleaded guilty to stealing a face cream worth RM38 belonging to a supermarket at Wisma Merdeka on Jan 7.

The offence was under Section 380 of the Penal Code which is punishable by a maximum jail of seven years and also liable to a fine, upon conviction.

Nuruhuda also ordered the 25-year-old accused to be referred to the Immigration Department after serving sentence for further action.

Meanwhile, Reynald Gonzalez, 24, was fined RM25, in default, seven days’ jail for being drunk in a public place.

He admitted to being drunk and uttering harsh words to civil servants who were carrying out their duties at Taman Luyang Perdana on Feb 11.

He was charged under Section 15 of the Minor Offences Ordinance which provides for a fine of RM25, upon conviction.
