GEORGE TOWN: The government plans to set the minimum retirement grade for civil servants with excellent service at Grade 54.

Chief Secretary to the Government Datuk Seri Dr Ali Hamsa said the matter was still at the study stage where several matters, like financial implication, the excellence level of the officers concerned and salary scheme needed to be looked into first.

“We are looking into this proposal. The aim is for civil servants to always strife to give their best to the country.

“The excellence level of the officers concerned must meet the required standard and possibly, this kind of retirement scheme will be implemented scheme by scheme.

“We are hoping to get it implemented by end of the year after completion of the study,” he told reporters at a gathering with civil servants in Penang here yesterday.

In another development, Ali urged the opposition to be fair in their evaluation of civil servants as implementers of government policies.

He said the opposition’s act of criticising and condemning civil servants without any basis was inappropriate.

“Making a conclusion is easy. We need proof if there are claims of misappropriation or corruption. That is why we have the police and the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission to investigate,” he added.

Earlier in is speech, Ali advised civil servants to be sensitive to their surroundings and new challenges, especially when dealing with educated clients and place importance on quality and efficient service.

“The people know their rights to be treated fairly and reasonable by government agencies. Therefore, it is crucial that all promises made by government agencies and departments be fulfilled, so as to build the people’s confidence,” he added. — Bernama
