KLIASEPANG: The Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) Customs Department detained an Iranian salon owner and her daughter at the airport for smuggling in RM1.28 million worth of drugs.

KLIA Customs director Badaruddin Mohamed Rafik said the 46-year-old suspect and her daughter aged 25 were detained for suspicion of trafficking in 6.76 kilogramme of methamphetamine in a concealed compartment of their baggage.

“They arrived from Bangkok and were detained immediately at Customs. This is third time the suspects have entered Malaysia as tourists,” he said at a press conference, here yesterday.

Badaruddin said the duo have been remanded for seven days under Section 39B of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952, which carries the mandatory death sentence upon conviction.

He added that between January and February this year, KLIA Customs managed to cripple nine drug syndicates and seized 42.23 kg of methamphetamine estimated at RM8.024 million at the airport and Low Cost Carrier Terminal (LCCT). — Bernama
