MIRI: Motorcyclists who like to race on the road or Mat Rempit are being urged to sign up with registered motoring associations which organise legal and safer activities.

Handing over donations to three motocycling groups which will be representing Miri in the Final of the National Championship Youth and Sports (KBS)-AAM Kapcai Endurance on Feb 23 and 24 in Kuala Lumpur, Sibuti MP Ahmad Lai Bujang said all motorcyclists who are registered members in these associations will enjoy benefits such as participation in racing programmes held at safer locations.

“The government has made provisions for them to carry out their activities and if they are registered with the organization, then they can apply for aid or grants from the representatives of the people,” he explained yesterday.

Ahmad Lai added that motorcyclists should use the right channels if they want to test their racing skills on any racing circuits provided by the government.

“I often came across several youths who would gather by the roadsides with their bikes and then have their race on the road which is also used by other road users,” he observed.

Expressing concern for the safety of all road users, Ahmad Lai urged all youths interested in motor sports to register first rather than participate in illegal motor sports races.

“If you register, you not only prevent yourself from being involved with illegal racing, but you are also helping to lessen the numbers of accidents and it surely will also open more doors of opportunities to be involved in a professional motor sports career,” he said.

Meanwhile, on the championship, about 72 riders from Sabah and Sarawak will participate in three categories which are below 100 cc, 110 cc and 120 cc and above.

He hoped that holding legal races at specified locations will help educate youths on the importance of road safety.
