Repeat drug offender to languish longer in jail

KOTA KINABALU: A drug addict, who had several past convictions of consuming syabu, received a lengthy jail sentence from the Magistrate’s Court here yesterday for repeating a similar offence.

Magistrate Nuruhuda Mohd Yusoff sentenced Nooraini Suhaibun, 23, to five years’ jail and ordered her to be placed under police supervision for two years.

She was caught after her urine sample tested positive for drug at Karamunsing police station on Oct 7, 2012.

The magistrate convicted her under Section 15 (1) (a) of the Dangerous Drugs Act (DDA) 1952 which is punishable under Section 39C (1) (b) DDA 1952 which carries a jail term of not less than five years and not exceeding seven years and whipping of not more than three strokes.

In an unrelated case, Chong Chi Wui, 40, was jailed for seven days for being drunk in a public place.

Chong, who pleaded guilty to the offence at a shop in Segama on March 30, 2012, was charged under Section 15 of the Minor Offences Ordinance which carries a maximum fine of RM25 upon conviction.

Meanwhile, 23-year-old, Datu Azman Datu Sulaiman, will be tried on March 25–26 this year for possessing two stolen wristwatches.

He was alleged to have been in possession of the items at the Kota Kinabalu traffic police office here on Feb 17.

The indictment came under Section 411 of the Penal Code which is punishable by a jail term of up to five years and a fine upon conviction.

Earlier, Datu Azman, who pleaded guilty to the charge, disputed the facts of the case.

The magistrate, however, rejected his guilty plea and ordered for the case to be tried.
