Worker ordered to enter defence on three charges

KUCHING: A general worker from Lundu was yesterday ordered to enter his defence on charges of robbery, intimidation and possession of a dangerous weapon — the kuan tao — tomorrow (Feb 22).

Sessions Court Judge Amelati Parnel ruled that the prosecution had successfully proven a prima facie case against Mohamad Noorhairel Bujang, 32, from Kampung Tanah Hitam.

The accused allegedly committed armed robbery on Loo Swee Huat at a shop in Sematan around 3.30pm on March 10 last year.

He is also charged with intimidating Jefri Tugan on the same day, time and place by chasing the victim away from the shop with the weapon.

The third charge alleges that Noorhairel had in his possession the dangerous weapon in a public place.

Armed robbery is an offence under Section 392 of the Penal Code and carries a maximum 14 years in prison, a fine or whipping; while intimidation carries a maximum penalty of two years in prison and whipping.

Possession of a dangerous weapon is provided for by Section 6(1) of the Corrosive, Explosive Substances and Dangerous Weapons Act 1958 and carries a maximum prison term of two years and whipping.
