SIBU: The decision by State DAP chairman Wong Ho Leng not to defend the Sibu parliamentary seat in the coming election will not make it easier for Sarawak United People’s Party (SUPP) to wrest the seat from the opposition.

Temenggong Vincent Lau who has been nominated by SUPP branch to stand in the Sibu constituency said yesterday he was surprised by the decision but cautioned it would still be a tough fight with or without Ho Leng.

“I will continue to prepare myself to face the election, and this includes working hard to serve the people,” Lau told thesundaypost when asked to comment on Ho Leng’s decision not to contest in the coming election.

He added: “I stand for the election with only one single objective that is, to serve the people and bring development to Sibu. This has always been my objective.”

Lau said he respected Ho Leng’s decision, adding that health was most important.

“When one faces some health problems, I think it is also important to ensure one recovers. Hence, it is important to take sufficient rest.

“I sincerely hope that after getting treatment and taking plenty of rest, he (Ho Leng) will recover and regain his health,” he said.

During a press conference in January, Ho Leng confirmed  undergoing radiotherapy and chemotherapy treatment in Singapore for glioma on his brain.

On Jan 19, the state DAP chairman expressed optimism he would recover in time to defend Sibu parliamentary seat, which they wrested from BN in the 2010’s by-election.

In the last by-election, BN-SUPP candidate councillor Robert Lau Hui Yew lost narrowly to Ho Leng by a slim 398 votes.
