TAWAU: Students of Chinese primary schools who are currently studying in government schools are urged to not ignore Bahasa Malaysia as it is important not only in examinations but also in their working career in future.

Assistant Minister of Infrastructure Development Datuk Pang Yuk Ming said this is because the level of education in Bahasa Malaysia in non-government schools is low when compared with the level in government schools.

“I also urge teachers to pay attention to this issue, where students from non-government primary schools will have trouble learning our national language in secondary schools,” he said at the opening ceremony of SMK Jambatan Putih’s Chinese New Year celebration organized by the school’s Chinese language sessions at the school’s hall.

Pang said he had touched on the matter before where the was a need to increase the level of education in Bahasa Malaysia in non-government schools to ensure that the students concerned would not face any problems during examinations in secondary schools in future.

“This is not a compulsion because it is one of our responsibilities as citizens of Malaysia and it would be beneficial to the students involved,” he said.

At the same time, Pang also encouraged the school’s students to give full attention to aspects of education which would help not only themselves but also their families and country.

He said the collaboration between educators, parents and students would improve academic achievement of the school.

Also present during the ceremony was headmaster of the school, Chow Yuet Lee.
