Hearing of Dirang’s murder case begins

JOHOR BAHARU: The hearing of a labourer charged with the murder of five-year-old Nurul Nadirah Abdullah or Dirang as she was affectionately known, who skeletal remains was found in an oil palm plantation in Nusa Damai, Masai, in March last year, began in the High Court here yesterday.

At yesterday’s proceeding, head of the Johor Prosecution Unit, Umar Saifuddin Jaafar, in his opening speech, said the prosecution would call a few witnesses, including Dirang’s mother and grandmother, as well as Dr Mohamad Aznool Haidy Ahsorori, who conducted a post-mortem on the body.

“The testimony by this specialist will prove that through the fungus and fly eggs found on the body the victim died on March 2, 2012 or earlier.

“All the evidence that will be submitted will proof beyond reasonable doubts that the accused was involved and had caused the death of Nurul Nadirah,” he added. In the dock was Muidin Maidin, 26, who is charged with murdering the girl at Ladang Kelapa Sawit, Jalan Suria 47, Bandar Seri Alam here between 11.30am on March 1, 2012 and midnight on Marc 2, 2012. The charge, under Section 302 of the Penal Code, carries the mandatory death sentence upon conviction.

Nurul Nadirah was reported missing on March 1 last year after going out to buy instant mee and eggs at a grocery near her house at Flat Seri Delima, Bandar Seri Alam, before her charred remains was found on March 8.

On March 12, through DNA testing, the body was confirmed to be that of Nurul Nadirah.

Yesterday, the court heard testimony from Dirang’s mother and grandmother, Roselyn Alan and Milnah Jul, respectively, as well as three photographers from the Crime Investigation Department of the Seri Alam district police.

The police photographers are Lance Corporal Mohamad Fouzi Zakaria, Corporal Rosman Abdullah and Corporal Northa Basiman. The hearing before Judge Datuk Abdul Halim Aman continues today.

Umar Saifuddin is assisted by deputy public prosecutor Jasmee Hameeza Jaafar, while Muidin is represented by lawyers Mohd Daud Ismail and Mohamad Abd Kadir. — Bernama
