Four new records set by KOTAS swimmers

SIBU: Three records were rewritten and one equaled but it was the swimmers from Kuching (KASA) and Kota Samarahan Amateur Swimming Association (KOTAS) who set four new records at the 40th Sarawak Age Group Swimming Championship held at Bukit Lima Swimming Pool yesterday.

KOTAS swimmer Tan Tyng set the first record in the Girls’ C 800m freestyle with a new time of 10:08.18”which broke the old record of 10:58.27set by Tan Zhen Xuan last year.

Her teammate, Angela Chieng set another record in the Girls’ A 800m freestyle with a new time of 9:25.42”.

Angela smashing swim earned her great accolades as the record she broke belonged to national swimmer Hii Siew Siew with a time of 9:26.15” set in 2011.

Angela was to compete in two more events and there was every indication that she would return to Kuching after the competition with a flourish.

In the Boys’ section, the day belonged to 16-year-old Roydon Ong, Kuching’s top swimmer when he produced encouraging signs of a champion in the making.

Roydon clocked a superb time of 54.16” in Boys’ A 100m freestyle to equal the time set by national swimmer Daniel Bego in 2005.

Adrian Chua Wei Kiat also created a new record in the Boys’ C 100m freestyle when he clocked a new time of 1:04.32” to beat the old time of 1:04.95” set by Ling Ee Yeh in 2006.

Over 200 swimmers from throughout the state competed in the championship aimed to unearth new talents.
