NIBONG TEBAL: A factory bus driver pleaded not guilty at the magistrates’ court here yesterday to the charge of causing the death of two passengers in a road accident in December last year.
Kamarruddin Derais, 51, from Kampong Sempeneh Seberang, Batu Kurau, Perak, made the plea before Magistrate Siti Salwa Jaafar.
The accused, who was driving the bus with registration number WCP2596, was charged with driving recklessley to the extent of causing the death of Nurul Nadhirah Sudin, 21, and Samsiah Hasan, at Kilometre 150.6 of the North-South Expressway heading to the north at 6.15am on Dec 21, 2012.
He was charged under Section 41 (1) of the Road Transport Act 1987 which carries a sentence of not more than 10 years’ imprisonment and a fine of not more than RM20,000.
Deputy Public Prosecutor Nur Farhana Hashim appeared for the prosecution while the accused was not represented.
Kamarruddin was granted bail of RM12,000 with one surety while his driving licence was suspended temporarily.
The court set April 2 for rementon of the case. — Bernama
