SIBU: Sibu Municipal Council Chairman Datuk Tiong Thai King said the areas surrounding Rejang Park are set to enjoy brisk business after the scheduled completion of the RM6 million Sibu Prudential Volleyball Association Stadium at the end of the year.

He said the stadium could be an add impetus to lure visitors to the area when there were on-going tournaments, be they of national or international calibre.

‘When visitors crowd the area, definitely this will help boost the development of Rejang Park and, in the long run, it will help business in the centre to grow,’ he told reporters after witnessing the topping-off ceremony of the stadium yesterday morning.

Tiong expressed his gratitude to Sibu Volleyball Association for taking on the massive task of coming up with the stadium, believed to be the first of its kind in the country.

“This is a great job and we should all be grateful to SVA for making things possible,” he said.

Tiong said the stadium could become an icon for Sibu that those in Sibu could be proud of it.

“Hopefully, local spikers will grab the chance to make full use of the stadium and train hard to ensure that we will continue to rule supreme in the sport,” he said.

Sarawak, Tiong added, have been the national powerhouse in volleyball for the past few decades. “We are all proud of our players and we aim to maintain our supremacy in the sport in many years to come.”
