KOTA KINABALU: Tanjung Kapor assemblyman Datuk Teo Chee Kang who commended on the setting up of the new Special Security Area in Sabah stressed that infrastructure and logistics to enhance security must also be put in place.

“I urge the government to expedite implementation of the Custom Quarantine Immigration Security Centre in Kudat in order to have tight control over the entry of people and goods to Kudat via the sea.

“Meanwhile, as the Philippine-owned Pulau Mangsi is just 30 minutes boat ride from Pulau Banggi and that people move freely from Banggi to Kudat, the Immigration Department should impose regular checks at the ferry jetty to prevent illegal entries,” Teo said in a statement yesterday.

The Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) secretary general said the announcement of the establishment of the Special Security Area covering Kudat, Sandakan, Lahad Datu, Kunak and Tawau by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak is highly commendable.

He is of the opinion that the increase of five battalions of military and police personnel along the coast line from Kudat in the north to Tawau in the southeast will put up a strong front to deter foreign intrusion.

“It is a manifestation of the government’s commitment to ensure peace and security in the region, and that sovereignty over Sabah cannot be compromised. I thank the Prime Minister for including Kudat into the Special Security Area,” Teo said.
