BANDAR SERI BEGAWAN:  The popular Waroeng Penyet, one of the many penyet restaurants that has gained popularity in Singapore and Malaysia, has opened its first-ever branch in Brunei bringing in its top selling Ayam Penyet, which seems to be one of the latest food crazes in Brunei, Borneo Bulletin reported.

There has always been a full house since its opening last week. Through its semi-fast food concept, patrons will able to have a quick lunch or dinner without sacrificing quality in Waroeng Penyet.

Waroeng Penyet offers a selection of authentic Indonesian cuisines from its variation of penyet to oxtail soup as well as refreshing drinks and juices.

One of its top selling items, the Ayam Penyet, is a traditional Indonesian fried chicken which first originated in East Java where penyet literally means flattened. The marinated chicken is basically smashed after deep-frying to loosen and tenderise the meat and afterwards, sprinkled with crunchy bits of batter. The chicken dish is then served in a wooden bowl with fried tempe and tofu as well as vegetable garnishes.

As for its sambal, Waroeng Penyet has two levels of spiciness, mild and spicy, where patrons can choose according to their preference.

According to Arief Agawijaya, the founder and owner of Waroeng Penyet, the concept ofpenyet first originated with tempe and tofu. Penyet has been brought to the next level with restaurants offering various kinds of penyet dishes such as the empal (beef) penyet, bawal (fish) penyet and lele penyet and others. These kinds of penyet are also available in Waroeng Penyet.

For those wanting to try out other items, Waroeng Penyet also offers dishes such as Ayam Panggang, Rawon ( Javanese Beef Soup) and Gado-Gado.

Customers can find Waroeng Penyet at the first floor of Times Square Shopping Complex in Berakas.
