KUCHING: Two police inspectors charged with causing the death of a theft suspect last year will be tried in the High Court from May 6 to 17 this year.

The two suspects jointly charged for the offence, Mohd Ezri Amar Pavel, 31, and Mohd Hazril Mohamed Yusof, 33, appeared before Justice Datuk Rhodzariah Bujang who made the decision yesterday.

She maintained the original trial date as fixed when the case was first mentioned before her in Court.

The court was told by the prosecution that more than 30 witnesses will be called.

Both accused were further remanded in jail as their charge under Section 302 of the Penal Code is a non-bailable offence which carries the mandatory death penalty upon conviction.

The duo allegedly caused the death of Kamarul Zamrizal Kamaruzaman, 29, while he was in police detention at the D7 Crime Investigation Department of police headquarters at Jalan Nagor. They allegedly committed the offence at about 7pm on Nov 4 last year.

Ezri and Hazril were originally charged under Section 325 of the Penal Code for assault, but it was amended to murder after the victim died after having been in coma as a result of brain damage.
