KOTA KINABALU: Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) students have been reminded not to listen to rumours spread through social websites and SMS on the issue of intrusion by Sulu militants in Lahad Datu and Semporna.

UMS Students Representative Council president Mohd Juhar Harun said they should get accurate information from the university’s management or police on the latest security developments in the affected areas.

“As we are aware, the university’s management has given its assurance on the safety of students with the presence of security forces,” he said in a statement here yesterday.

Final year students of Sekolah Sains Sosial (SSS) from Lahad Datu who were anxious of developments in their villages were also told to seek information from the university and not to be taken in by rumours.

“Rumours will only complicate the situation and create unnecessary tension. Therefore students should refrain from becoming agents of rumour mill and should concentrate on their studies and lectures as usual,” added Mohd Juhar. — Bernama
