KUALA TERENGGANU: Seventy-six schools in Terengganu, 55 of which are primary schools, have achieved the state government’s academic target of 20-10-5-2 for public examinations last year.

The target, which was launched by Terengganu Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Ahmad Said in March 2010, is to have the percentage of students scoring straight As in Ujian Pencapaian Sekolah Rendah (UPSR) at 20 per cent, Penilaian Menengah Rendah (PMR) at 10 per cent, Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) at five per cent and Sijil Tinggi Persekolahan Malaysia (STPM) at two per cent.

State Education, Higher Education, Science, Technology and Human Resources Committee chairman Datuk Ahmad Razif Abdul Rahman said Terenganu would not be among the states with the best academic achievement it were not for the teachers and their undivided commitment.

As such, he said the state government had allocated approximately RM300,000 to give the ‘Anjung Ilmu’ Award to selected schools to motivate the teachers to excel and improve their schools’ academic performance.

“As a matter of fact, a gathering of teachers from across the state will also be held soon where the menteri besar is also expected to give his message and share his hopes with the teachers,” he said this to reporters after the launch Anjung Ilmu Appreciation for Achievements in UPSR and PMR 2012 and Modular Evaluation and Acceleration of Learning Performance (5P2M) here yesterday.

Sekolah Kebangsaan (SK) Tapu, Hulu Terengganu received the Anjung Ilmu Menteri Besar Award for UPSR achievement, while Sekolah Menengah Sains Sultan Mahmud received the award for PMR. Each school also received cash prize of RM10,000.

SK Tapu headmaster Shukri Ghaza said the school’s success in having 16 of its 20 UPSR candidates last year scoring straight As would not be made possible without the roles played by the teachers in organising study camps, hajat prayer and tuition for their students.

“This year, we have set a target to have 13 out of our 27 UPSR candidates to score 5As,” he told Bernama after receiving the award.

Meanwhile, SM Sultan Mahmud Senior Assistant Teacher Zulkeflee A.Rahman said the school had produced 88 straight As scorers out of it 104 candidates for PMR last year.

“Alhamdulillah (All praise be to Allah), the school was also named the best school at the state level and the third best for full boarding schools at the national level,” he said. — Bernama
