Befrienders KK appeals to public for donations for displaced residents of Lahad Datu, Semporna

KOTA KINABALU: Befrienders Kota Kinabalu whose mission is to help the distressed took the initiative to coordinate collection of Humanitarian Aid for Sabahans forced to leave their homes due to the intrusion in Lahad Datu, Semporna and Kunak.

Akif Jaya Sdn Bhd, which generously provided space for a collection centre and the Police with their Police Volunteer Reserve Force (PVR), who will be coordinating the delivery and transportation of the aid to Lahad Datu, have made this ‘We Care Humanitarian Aid’ initiative possible.

This aid, in the form of essential livelihood items, will assist the displaced people of Lahad Datu at the three evacuation centres, namely Embara Budi, Fajar Harapan and Cenderawasih.

These people of Lahad Datu left their homes with only clothes on their back and some have been reported to be sleeping on the floors of the relief centres.

A check with the Lahad Datu district police chief revealed that the following items are required – T-shirts, slippers, sandals for children and adults (new or used, if used must be in clean and wearable conditions), towels, mattresses, pillows, blankets (new), Toiletries (soaps, shampoo, toothbrush, toothpaste), sanitary pads, sweets for children, colouring pencils and crayons for children.

Befrienders KK is calling on all citizens of Malaysia, members of the public in Kota Kinabalu and nearby areas to come together, show that they care and to help the evacuated people in Lahad Datu who are in urgent need of assistance.

The ‘We Care Humanitarian Aid’ initiative will run from March 12- 15, 2013.

“We aim to hand over the collected items to PDRM on March 16 so that they can send them to the people need the items most by the next week.

All donations are to be delivered to Ground Floor, Wisma Wanita, Jalan Tuaran, Kota Kinabalu (during office hours from 9am to 5pm) and donors are requested to contact any of the above persons to inform them of the delivery time and date.

All donated items must be in good condition and donations in the form of monetary, food or drinks are not accepted.
