WTK’s Wong Kie Nai dies at 70

SIBU: Sarawak timber tycoon Datuk Wong Kie Nai has passed away in Sydney, Australia at the age of 70.

Sibu-born Kie Nai who was chief executive officer of WTK Holdings Berhad (WTK) from Feb 3, 1998 to Feb 28, 2013, passed away on March 11 after battling cancer for about five years.

He moved to Australia to seek treatment and since then was seldom seen in Sibu.

Kie Nai is survived by his wife Datin Ma Wai Fong, son Hou Liang and daughter Hou Wai.

The second son of WTK founder Datuk Wong Tuong Kwong, Kie Nai an accountant by training,  was a member of CPA (Australia) and member of Malaysian Institute of Accountants.

He played a major role in the expansion of WTK and was responsible for WTK’s timber operation in Sarawak including overseeing market development as well as non-timber operation in Peninsular Malaysia.

Kie Nai was active in politics in his early days. He was a member of Sarawak National Party (SNAP) and a senator from 1977 to
1983.

He was conferred the Panglima Gemilang Bintang Kenyalang (PGBK) on Sept 16, 1991 by Yang DiPertua Negeri Sarawak for his contributions to the state.
