MUAR: The Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM) is setting up a special unit, to be known as ‘Amanita’, in an effort to obtain information on unreported crime in the society.

PDRM National Key Result Areas (NKRA) secretariat chairman Datuk Ayub Yaakob said the unit recognised housewives who sometimes had important information which they discussed through their ‘window meetings’.

“Our approach is to obtain information on crime which are not reported. Sometimes, this kind of information is passed from mouth to mouth, but not reported because of certain reasons.

“The housewives, they know many issues and information which they share through their ‘window meetings’,” he told a media conference after the opening of a crime prevention programme by Deputy Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin. The programme is organised by the Malaysian Crime Prevention Foundation where Muhyiddin is the chairman.

Also present at the function were MCPF vice-chairman Tan Sri Lee Lam Thye and Johor Police chief Datuk Mohd Mokhtar Mohd Shariff.

Ayub said the setting up of the unit, to be launched soon, would involve 152 women officers.

The setting up of the unit, he said, reflected the PDRM’s recognition on the role of women.

“Women not only play an important role at home, including as adviser to their husband.

“We believe they can also play a role in maintaining peace and order in the country,” he added. — Bernama
