It was launched in 2007 with three host organisers: Great Britain, China and Mexico. In recent years, countries such as Qatar, Russia and the United Arab Emirates have been added to the list of hosts.

For the sixth edition in 2013, the DWS comprises six legs starting in Beijing, Dubai (second leg), Edinburgh (third), Moscow (fourth) with the final two legs in the Mexican cities of Guadalajara (fifth) and Mexico City (sixth).
