Many voters’ names removed from electoral roll – MP

KOTA KINABALU: Sabah DAP has claimed that many registered voters had checked and found their names being removed or disappeared totally from the electoral roll.

The party’s member of parliament for Kota Kinabalu, Hiew King Cheu, said this happened after the voters had exercised their voting rights many times in the previous elections in the same constituency.

“These people filed their complaints to my MP office here and they wanted the matter to be brought up and taken seriously.

“They said this matter is highly ridiculous and it also reflects the inefficiency of the Election Commission (EC), or may be their names had been removed or deleted from the electoral rolls for a purpose. Only the EC can explain as to why this thing happened,” said Hiew yesterday.

“The lady said that such an explanation is totally unacceptable. She said what if the computer of EC ‘went crazy’ … many voters’ names will either disappear or being ‘accidentally’ deleted from the rolls,” he added.

Hiew who had personally helped many voters to check their voting places in the electoral rolls through the EC website, said he found that in many cases the reply showed “record not found”.

He said voters were angry when their names went missing from the electoral roll and found it unreasonable why their names could disappear from the roll.

“Many voters who cannot find their names in the electoral roll will miss their chance to exercise their rights to vote. This is not fair to them because they are genuine voters and had voted so many times in past elections,” said Hiew.

He advised every registered voter whose name was missing from the electoral rolls to immediately check with the EC to have their names reinstated.
