The initiatives of TMP are working to build community support towards ensuring continuous sustainable use of fisheries resources, protection of biodiversity and maintenance of marine ecological integrity in the area. Greater involvement of stakeholders in management decisions is a central tenant of Ecosystem Approach to Fisheries Management.
The establishment of no-take zones and compliance to non-fishing areas in TMP, and for the commercial fishers to be self monitoring in all aspects is crucial for management of the marine protected area.
Realising the importance of working with youths and the younger generation, the initiatives also promote volunteerism and stewardship among the youths of local communities.
On Banggi island, activities to raise awareness on marine conservation and to promote green lifestyle among local communities are carried out through the Banggi Environmental Awareness Centre (BEAC), located in the heart of Karakit.
Awareness activities targeted at a wide range of audiences including school children and adults, including regular educational shows, theater, competitions in drawing, reading and writing, learning sessions and outdoor activities such as beach clean-ups and Discover SCUBA.
The shift of paradigm that is happening with the conservation efforts to promote the gazetting and ecosystem based management of the TMP will be highlighted at the Mini Tun Mustapha Park Symposium today (March 20), which will be part of Universiti Malaysia Sabah’s International Seminar on Marine Science & Aquaculture.
The use of zones will protect important habitats and the inclusion of local communities and commercial activities will allow for sustainable resource use at the biggest marine protected area of Malaysia.
