KUCHING: Senior Minister and Minister of Social Development Tan Sri William Mawan Ikom agrees that Sibu is capable of organising the volleyball and athletics events when Sarawak host the Malaysia Games (Sukma) in 2016.

This follows the comments by Sibu Division Amateur Athletics Association (SDAAA) president Dr Gregory Hii’ who had expressed hope that the state government would let Sibu host some events in Sukma 2016.

“Although Sukma is still far away, I am full of praise for SDAAA’s effort and commitment in their bid. This shows that they are indeed committed in helping Sarawak organise the 2016 Sukma,” Mawan said in an exclusive interview with The Borneo Post.

“Sibu’s facilities in volleyball is top notch and is also up to national standards. No doubt about their capabilities in becoming host to the event too,” Mawan shared.

He also revealed that the 2016 Games will see all the divisions in Sarawak take part and get to become host.

“In preparation for the games, we need to build more facilities but I am not talking about Kuching only. We only want the best for Sukma 2016 and we want everybody in Sarawak to take part in this prestigious event.”

He is expecting that the state will get all existing facilities to be upgraded and new ones built according national standards.

Sarawak’s last and only stint as Sukma host was 12 years ago in 1990.

Then Sarawak also emerged as overall champions.
