BANDAR SERI BEGAWAN: Accessible walkways for those who are physically unable to climb stairs were suggested yesterday during the 9th Legislative Council meeting with the Minister of Development stating that the idea could be a possibility, Borneo Bulletin reported.

The idea was brought forward by YB Awang Haji Tahamit bin Haji Nudin who highlighted that the elderly and the differently-abled should be provided with an alternative means when crossing roads such as underground tunnels, which could also mean less zebra crossings that hold up traffic.

In response, YB Pehin Orang Kaya lndera Pahlawan Dato Seri Setia Awang Haji Suyoi bin Haji Osman said that “this idea can be considered” but “there is a significant difference in the construction of a tunnel and an overhead bridge” especially in terms of financing such projects.

“We have to balance between cost and benefit,” said the minister but the idea could be an option for future developments.

Another possibility, meanwhile, is the construction of an overhead bridge connecting the Tamu Muhibah to Bangar Town, which will be reviewed stressing upon the need and, “Insya Allah, this will be carried out when the need for it is established.”
