KUALA LUMPUR: Consumers’ continued appetites for securely saving and organising high-definition multimedia have driven the growth of the hard disk market, says Seagate Technology, a global leader in storage solutions.

It said digital content demand continued to stem from a wide range of sources, including social media and mobile device, fuelling the need for storage.

Analysts had estimated that over four billion hours of user-generated content was watched each month on YouTube alone while user generated high-definition camcorder video, still pictures and smartphone clip sharing storage needs were expected to quadruple from 2013 to 2015, it said in a statement.

According to International Data Corporation, the ever-growing number of mobile and content capture devices using cloud services was fuelling the growth of digital content.

“Mobile devices and the cloud are coming together to drive ongoing demand for hard disk drives, with shipments reaching more than 585 million units this year and hard disk drive Terabyte shipments worldwide growing at a 30 per cent 2012 to 2016 compound annual growth rate,” it said.

Seagate Technology is the first hard disk drive manufacturer to ship two billion hard disk drives, driven by explosive demand for storage from mobile applications, cloud infrastructures, social media, business applications and a wide variety of consumer markets.

It took Seagate 29 years to reach one billion units shipped and four years to reach the second billion milestones. — Bernama
