KOTA SAMARAHAN: After 42 years in the automotive industry, NB Group of Companies is diversifying its interests into operating a driving institute.

The locally established company is on track in achieving its target of operating at least three driving institutes in Sarawak by this year. To date, two of the driving institutes, one each in Samarahan and Sibu, have commenced their operations while the third in Kapit is expected to open in the near future.

Speaking at the grand opening of Institut Memandu NB Motors Sdn Bhd (IMNB) in Kota Samarahan here yesterday, the institute general manager Aaron Chong pledged that they would go beyond helping learners to pass their driving test and produce future drivers with high discipline and correct attitude.

“Our philosophy is to provide learners with a strong foundation to ensure that they have the qualities and the maturity to be on the road after they have passed their driving tests. We also want to project a professional image for our institute and the industry in general by ensuring that our instructors are passionate, experienced and are presentable in their outlook.

“In terms of knowledge based professionalism, we intend to enhance the instructors with a wider scope of driving education in the near future.”

The opening was attended by Road Transport Department (JPJ) director general Datuk Seri Solah Mat Hassan, IMNB managing director Datuk William Ngu Ung Wei, who is also a co-founder of NB Group of Companies, and other senior officers of JPJ and NB Group.

The institute, located near the main road to Serian from Kota Samarahan, is built on a six-acre piece of land. Operating since December 2012, it has full facilities and infrastructure as per the requirement of the Road Transport to hold instructions and tests for learner drivers.

“Our institute is well equipped with a canteen, surau and comfortable classrooms for learner drivers to do their theory part of their licence. Our vehicles (cars, bikes and lorries) are all new and well maintained so that we can provide the optimal conditions for learners,” said Chong. He pointed out that it was their vision to make IMNB a one-stop centre for any licence.

“In the near future, we also plan to seek out other forms of driving instruction which can cater not only for the learners who just passed their driving test but for seasoned drivers who wish to improve on their driving skills to keep up with the ever challenging driving conditions in today’s environment.”

NB Group started from a humble beginning with a car repair business. Today, the company has businesses comprising passenger vehicles, commercial vehicles, machinery and equipment, trading and services as well as property development.

In conjunction with the opening, IMNB is holding a lucky draw for anyone who signs up for any class of driving licence.
