KUCHING: A jobless man involved in a car theft was sentenced to one year’s imprisonment yesterday.

Liew Kuet Tung, 28, from BDC Housing Stampin, pleaded guilty to the charge under Section 411 of the Penal Code which carries a jail term of not less than six months and not more than five years, and also a possible fine.

He was involved in a Proton Waja car theft on March 18 at a chicken farm at Kampung Stass in Bau.

Liew, who is still single, in his mitigation said, he was currently jobless and before this he used to work as a general worker at a construction site.

He said he had wanted to go to Miri to work in an offshore-related job.

He also said his parents were both more than 50 years old and not working.

According to him, they had disowned him and he had not seen them for eight years.

He is the third child among five siblings.

He said he had been staying alone at a rented room for RM150 a month at BDC. He also had been to Narcotic Addictions Rehabilitation Centre (Puspen) Papar Sabah for two years for drug addiction.

He said this was his first offence and he prayed for leniency as he had pleaded guilty to the charge.

He promised not to repeat the offence in future and he hoped to start a new life.

Magistrate Maris Agan accepted the plea of guilty and convicted him on the plea.

Before passing sentence, the magistrate had taken into consideration public interest, nature of the offence, mitigation of the accused, that he had no previous conviction record and that he pleaded guilty to the charge.
