KOTA KINABALU: The Asian Excellence Association yesterday held a charity event to help save the Earth and at the same time improve well-being of the community.

The event at Karamunsing Complex outdoor exhibition area, dubbed: ‘How Great is Your Love, That is How Great the World Will Be’, aimed to raise RM400,000 for seven non-profit-organisations from sale of mud-balls, which are to be thrown into polluted rivers and drains to improve water quality.

The mud-balls are made of mountain clay, grain bran, and enzyme is added into the mix to form a muddy-ball, which is then fermented for a period of time. The enzyme contained in the mud-ball will convert harmful enzyme in polluted waters to ‘useful’ enzymes which will result in improved water quality.

Present at the event was Deputy Chief Minister cum Resource Development and Information Technology Minister Datuk Dr Yee Moh Chai, who urged the people to support the cause in an effort to save the Earth from further pollution.

“Today is a special day as it also happens to be Earth Hour where the world will be united when we commit ourselves to save the planet by turning off all unused electrical appliances for an hour.

“It is our duty and obligation to save the Earth and this event will further contribute to the efforts to help the planet; I hope that more people will support this event because it is for a good cause,” Yee remarked, in his speech.

Owner of Karamunsing Complex, Datuk James Kwong, also expressed his hope that the community would be generous towards contributing to the non-profit organisations, and at the same time help clean the polluted rivers and monsoon drains in Kota Kinabalu.

“Extra money earned should be given away to help others who are less fortunate. When we die, we can’t take our wealth with us, so why not use it to help others instead?” Kwong said.

The balls are sold at RM100 each and all proceeds will be donated to seven non-profit organisations.

Also present at the event were DBKK City Hall director-general Datuk Yeo Boon Hai, representatives from The Association of Chinese Sabah Welfare Committee, and others.
