KUCHING: Sports and social bodies were told to remain focused on grooming and training champion athletes instead of letting personal interests and internal bickering getting in the way.

Minister of Social Development Tan Sri William Mawan who spoke at the grants presentation ceremony held at the Civic Centre yesterday reminded them of their roles and functions.

He said the sports and social bodies should get rid of all distractions and concentrate on pursuing the greater interest for the sake of achieving the goals of making Sarawak a sports powerhouse to be reckoned with.

“Cultivate and build on the athletes’ advantages to make the next success possible… help and mould these young people to realise their own potentials,” he stressed while pointing out that Sarawak will host Sukma in 2016 and because of that all preparations must now be focused on achieving victory.

“If we don’t make a comeback then something must be seriously wrong somewhere and we will need to look seriously at ourselves if we can’t achieve the best results by 2016,” he added.

Excellence, he explained, consists of examining and improving many small processes and routines.

“If you are not satisfied with the current situation then look back and discuss on mistakes and from there, make improvements,” he urged.

“We have to look at sports development from a proper perspective and make Sarawak a great sports loving state and widely recognised as the birthplace of many sportsmen and sportswomen in Malaysia,” he said while making an appeal to all sectors to lend their support in ensuring Sarawak can produce world class athletes who can excel in all games.

During the function, Mawan presented grants amounting to RM5,073,600 to 45 sports associations and six youth organisations.

Meanwhile, the ministry’s permanent secretary Affandi Keli reminded all the associations to submit reports on their activities and progress for assessment.

“This is important because the report will determine the amount of grant given to respective associations. However, not every association will receive the grant annually,” he said.

“You have to earn it by staying visible in carrying out programmes and being relevant in achieving your vision in line with the government’s policy and aspirations,” he further said.

“I leave it to you to professionally manage your association. Congratulations to all for having done a good job and we hope that you will keep it up and achieve better results for many years to come,” he added.

Among the recipients for grants were Football Association of Sarawak (FAS), Sarawak Amateur Swimming Association, Sarawak Volleyball Association, Sarawak Kabbadi Association, Sarawak Muaythai Association, Kuching Sarawak Wau Association, Sarawak Astronomy Association and Malaysia Scouts Federation Sarawak Branch.

Assistant Minister of Sports Datuk Lee Kim Shin, Assistant Minister of Youth Development Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah, Assistant Minister of Culture and Heritage, Liwan Lagang and heads of departments were among those present.
