SANDAKAN: Home Minister Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Tun Hussien said the involvement of the local community could assist the Police Motorcycle Patrol Unit in their duty to reduce crime.

He stressed that the first line of defence was the community whereby disseminating accurate information could help enforcement forces to combat crimes.

“No matter how many personnel we have, it is still inadequate to combat crimes, but when we involve the community, I believe we can maintain our peace, sovereignty and dignity,” he said at the launching ceremony of URB at the community hall here  yesterday.

A total of 17 Kawasaki Ninja 250R bikes are being deployed in this district, and several more will soon be added.

Hishammuddin believed the URB had received positive response as Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak had announced an additional of 1,000 units of motorcycles to be distributed to several places.

The ceremony was also attended by Sabah deputy police commissioner SAC Tan Kok Liang, district police chief ACP Rowell Marung and vice chairman of Malaysia Crime Prevention Foundation, Tan Sri Andrew Liew Sui Fatt.

Earlier, Hishammuddin joined the motorcycle patrol unit to meet with local residents from Labuk Road to Taman Indah, Buli Sim-Sim Road to Dua Road and Coastal Road, before heading to the community hall.
