SIBU: Up to 30,000 people are expected to attend this year’s ‘Military Community Volunteering Day’ (MCVD) or better known as the ‘Army Open House’ in both Sibu and Miri this weekend.

The Army’s 9th Infantry Brigade based at Km16 Oya Road here is organising both functions.

The open day will be held from Friday till Sunday in both towns.

Its commander Brig-Gen Datuk Stephen Mandaw said the MCVD was part of the military’s nation-wide celebration this year.

He said Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak is scheduled to perform the simultaneous launching at the 10th Kilometre Military Camp in Kuantan on Saturday morning.

“The Sibu celebration will be a grand one where we will have about 60 booths for various exhibtions and a food festival at
the Sibu Town Square Phase Two.

“The state Minister of Local Government and Community Development Dato Sri Wong Soon Koh and other invited guests will jointly launch it at about 9am on Saturday,” Stephen said in a statement here yesterday.

He said the celebration was to win the ‘hearts and mind’ of the people in order for them to work together with the government to bring about stability which is very vital for continued development and progress.

The open house will be from 3pm to 11pm on Friday and from 7am to 11pm on Saturday and Sunday.

Those interested to participate can approach the brigade’s headquarters at Fong Ming Road for more details. — Bernama
