KUCHING: SUPP Youth secretary-general Wilfred Yap wants the topic of his debate with Bandar Kuching MP Chong Chieng Jen to be expanded to ‘BN Governance in Sarawak vis-a-vis PR Performance and Governance in Kedah, Kelantan, Penang and Selangor’.

He said that Chong’s proposed topic ‘BN Governance in Sarawak’ was too narrow and irrelevant “because this is not the state election”.

“When I say any topic it means topics that are related to the general election,” he said in response to Chong’s statement yesterday stating his readiness to take up the debate challenge with Yap.

Chong, who is Bandar Kuching MP, also said he would only debate under one condition — Yap must represent SUPP and not himself.

To this Yap said: “Debate is factual so I don’t need the party’s endorsement as it does not involve its (SUPP) policy. Why do I need the party’s blessing for a debate? The issue is about policies as he (Chong) stated.”

Yap, who is SUPP proposed candidate for Stampin, said he would not mind debating on the improvements that Chong had brought to Kota Sentosa as their state assemblyman as well, adding “whether BN endorses me or not for Stampin is only relevant if it is for a debate on the improvements that Stampin voters can expect for voting DAP.”

Yap also said he hated corruption and corrupt practices to its roots and if given an opportunity to represent Stampin, he would voice out further amendments to the Anti Corruption Act to make it more stringent and tighter.

“These include the shifting of the burden of proof to the persons charged with corrupt practice to furnish evidence that they obtained their wealth legitimately.”
