PSC appoints 14,257 new civil servants from January to March this year – Chairman

PUTRAJAYA: A total of 14,257 new civil servants comprising 7,043 permanent staff and 7,214 contract staff have been appointed from January to March this year, said Public Service Commission (PSC) chairman Tan Sri Mahmood Adam.

He said the PSC had received over 1.4 million (1,458,679) applications for permanent posts, of which 1.1 million (1,144,178) were from the Malays, Chinese (24,491), Indians (44,380), Sabah and Sarawak bumiputeras (218,622) and other races (27,008).

After due process, 5,160 (28.62 per cent of the applicants) Malays were appointed while the numbers for the other races were 374 (54.28 per cent) for Chinese, 403 (43.76 per cent) Indians, 965 (39.91 per cent ) bumiputeras from Sabah and Sarawak and 141 (35.97 per cent) others.

“This is the highest figure compared to other years. It clearly shows that Chinese and Indian youths are showing interest in the public sector which not only promises various facilities but also better pay than the private sector,” he told a news conference after chairing a PSC meeting with ministries, departments and state administrations, here yesterday.

Mahmood said there are 66,185 vacancies to be filled before year-end, bringing the total number of posts to 80,442 this year.

He said the meeting also decided on the confirmation of 4,622 civil servants, pensionable status for 4,029, extension of probation period for 471, termination of service involving 55 civil servants, disciplinary action on 24 cases, appeals heard on 237 disciplinary cases and appeala for promotion involving 21 cases. — Bernama
